General Summary
The Lizard People (or reptilian) conspiracy theory claims that shape-shifting reptilian beings—also called reptoids, draconians, or lizard people—control world governments and elite institutions by taking human form. They are said to originate from Alpha Draconis, the Orion constellation, or to be interdimensional; they have allegedly controlled humanity since ancient times and count world leaders (e.g. Queen Elizabeth, the Bushes, the Clintons) among their number. Believers say these entities create wars, control entertainment and media, and manipulate human DNA to keep people enslaved. The theory was popularized by David Icke (e.g. The Biggest Secret, 1998), drawing on earlier fiction (e.g. Robert E. Howard) and occult writings (e.g. Maurice Doreal’s “serpent race”). A 2013 Public Policy Polling survey found about 4% of American adults believed shape-shifting lizard people run the world, with another 7% unsure.
The theory fits Global Elites: a group (reptilian elite) outside normal government, multi-national, and multiple interconnected events across history. Mainstream science and media treat it as fringe; critics note the lack of evidence and the overlap with antisemitic tropes when “reptilian” is linked to “Jewish elite” in some versions (e.g. Icke’s “Babylonian Brotherhood”).
